System Sensor

Locomotive Fire Detection & Suppression Control Panel

The System Sensor–panel has been engineered to operate as a dedicated locomotive fire alarm and suppression controller. It provides continuous monitoring of thermal conditions within engine and electrical compartments and coordinates the activation of suppression equipment when required.


 

How the System Works

The locomotive fire detection and suppression panel continuously monitors thermal conditions within the engine and electrical compartments using fixed‑temperature detectors rated at 200°C. These detectors are positioned throughout identified fire‑risk zones and provide early warning of abnormal heat rise.

When a detector reaches its activation temperature, the system responds according to a dual‑stage logic:

  • Single‑detector activation:   Triggers visual and audible alarms on the panel, alerting the operator to a potential fire condition.
  • Dual‑detector activation:   Automatically initiates the fire‑suppression discharge sequence, releasing the extinguishing agent to control and suppress the fire.


Operator Configuration via LCD Touchscreen

The system provides a comprehensive configuration interface through the integrated LCD touchscreen, allowing operators to tailor system behavior to the locomotive’s operational requirements. Adjustable parameters include:

  • Suppression mode selection: Dual‑shot or single‑shot operation
  • Zone configuration: Enable/disable engine and electrical compartment detection zones
  • Alarm behavior: Latching, non‑latching, or combined alarm logic
  • Shutdown signaling: Enable/disable shutdown triggers for manual release, engine alarms, and electrical alarms
  • Activation delays: Adjustable time delays for ME1, ME2, EC1, and EC2 alarm circuits
  • Suppression release delay: Configurable discharge delay following dual‑gate activation
  • Power status monitoring: Primary and secondary supply supervision
  • Pressure switch configuration: Open/closed contact behavior
  • Fault monitoring: Real‑time status of alarm circuits, actuator circuits, and short‑circuit detection
  • Engine override control: Manual override function accessible directly from the touchscreen
  • System information: Serial number, compliance status, and OEM details
  • Bluetooth connection to access history log on mobile phone.

These configuration options allow the system to be adapted for different locomotive models, compartment layouts, and operational safety requirements without any hardware modification.


System Architecture

All field devices—including detectors, actuators, trainline interfaces, and power connections—are routed through a central junction box. This junction box serves as the primary interface between the panel and the locomotive’s fire protection hardware.


Panel Construction & Compatibility

The locomotive fire panel is housed in a robust metal enclosure measuring 370 mm (H) × 320 mm (W) × 112 mm (D). A stainless‑steel front fascia includes a hinged protective cover to shield the LCD and restrict unauthorized access.

The enclosure and fascia are designed as a direct mechanical replacement for the existing system, maintaining identical mounting points and cut‑outs for seamless changeover.


The panel is fully backwards compatible with the original fire suppression system. All field wiring, terminations, and interfaces remain unchanged. Upgrading requires only disconnecting the existing 40‑way ribbon cable and securing the new fascia to the current enclosure—no modifications to the driver’s cab installation are needed.

Cable Tester

 The Locomotive Fire System Cable Tester is a purpose‑built commissioning and maintenance tool designed to support every generation of locomotive fire detection hardware, including FP280, FP3470, System Sensor panels, and both diesel and electric locomotive platforms. It simulates the behaviour of legacy and modern fire panels, monitors all detection zones for open, short, and normal conditions, and reads precise end‑of‑line resistor values to identify cable faults before they become failures. With full backward compatibility to systems dating back to 1980 and dedicated modes for new Flex electric locomotives, the tester provides a safe, reliable way to validate wiring, actuators, trainline functions, and suppression interfaces during installation, factory testing, and ongoing service.

Rail Fire and Maintenance Suppression

Stat-X®

  • Stat‑X® thermally operated fire suppression units are fully self‑contained aerosol generators that combine detection and extinguishing in a single device, making them ideal for compact, high‑risk environments such as locomotive electrical compartments. Using a patented thermal activation mechanism, each unit automatically discharges when its casing reaches a defined temperature, rapidly flooding the enclosure with aerosol to suppress Class A (surface), B, and C fires. With no need for external detection circuits, control panels, wiring, or pressurised cylinders, installation costs and system complexity are significantly reduced, and the agent is stored directly at the point of discharge for maximum reliability. Stat‑X delivers exceptional firefighting performance relative to its size, providing fast knockdown that limits equipment damage and prevents fire spread. Units are available in multiple sizes—including 30T, 60T/60MT, 100T, 250T/250MT, 500T, and 1000T/1000MT—to suit a wide range of enclosure volumes and hazard profiles.

Rail Fire and Maintenance Engineering foam suppression

Form®

 F3 (Fluorine-Free Foam) water suppression fire cylinders are environmentally responsible fire-extinguishing units designed to replace older AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam) systems. These systems use fluorine-free foam concentrates that do not contain persistent bio-accumulative toxic compounds, making them a safer choice for the environment while still being highly effective on Class A (ordinary combustibles) and Class B (hydrocarbon fuels) fires.  

Aspects of F3 Suppression Cylinders:

  • Technology: These cylinders are utilized in pre-engineered, automatic fire suppression systems, often for mining, agricultural, and transport machinery, using a mixture of F3 foam concentrate and water.
  • Mechanism: F3 forms a vapor-sealing film to cool fuel surfaces and prevent re-ignition.
  • System Types: They are available in both Loss-of-Pressure (LOP) systems, where a heat-sensitive tube ruptures to trigger the system, and Rise-of-Pressure (ROP) systems.
  • Compliance: Systems are designed to meet standards such as AS5062:2022 (fire protection for mobile and transportable equipment).
  • Cylinder Features: Commonly constructed from stainless steel with polyester powder coating, available in multiple sizes (e.g., 23L to 106L), and often feature nitrogen over-pressure.
  • Replacement: Existing AFFF systems can often be upgraded to F3 by replacing the foam and increasing the cylinder pressure to improve fire suppression performance
